preaching study: ephesians 5:1-2

In “preaching study” posts, I share study & reflection as I prepare the Sunday message . I welcome interaction in this process, so feel free to share your thoughts. All Scripture quotes are from the NRSV unless otherwise noted. Thanks!

Yesterday was the first Sunday in my new appointment as Associate Pastor at John Wesley UMC in NW Houston. Everything went really well. It was a lot of fun and good energy at all the services. I preached the 5:30 contemporary service and enjoyed that. I’ll preach that one again this coming week, then preach the morning traditional services the week following. So…

This week’s text is Ephesians 5:1-2.

Don’t have much time just now, but thought I’d offer a quote I found quickly. From John Chrysostom, a great preacher of the early church, preaching on this text:

“Those who know themselves to be beloved act like beloved children.”

I can chew on that for quite a while.
