preaching study: mark 6:30-34, 53-56

In “preaching study” posts, I share study & reflection as I prepare the Sunday message . I welcome interaction in this process, so feel free to share your thoughts. All Scripture quotes are from the NRSV unless otherwise noted. Thanks!

I’m preaching this coming Sunday at the 5:30pm Contemporary Service. As I’ve been trying to do recently, I’ll be blogging the message prep, so look for more this week.

My texts are Mark 6:30-34 and 53-56. NRSV is here, NIV is here.

This happens to be the lectionary selection for the week. Typically, I shy away from snipping the text up into segments different from the way the writer arranged his material. But here I’m going to look into the connections between these two episodes, keeping in mind their relationship to the stories in between. These 2 two texts bookend the stories of the feeding of the 5000 and Jesus walking on water. In each of them, we read that people “recognized” Jesus and/or his band of disciples and hurried to them. I’m looking forward to seeing where this text leads.
